aspects of a Geography case study with regard to an educational
tour to Iceland. Our suggested itinerary can, of course, be adjusted
to suit your specific requirements.
DAY 1 - Arrival
A private coach will be waiting at the airport. The route leads from
Keflavík airport to Reykjavík for check-in at your
accommodation.
DAY 2 - Golden Circle Tour
Morning drive to Nesjavellir geothermal station for an introduction
on how Iceland utilizes its geothermal energy. Then head on to Þingvellir
National Park, a remarkable geological site and the most historic
site in Iceland. Þingvellir is the site of the world's oldest
democratic parliament founded in 930. The beautiful canyon running
through the park is actually the meeting point of two of the Earth's
tectonic plates.
Continue to Gullfoss and Geysir
geothermal area. We visit Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, one of
the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Only a few minutes drive
from Gullfoss is the famous Great Geysir which has lent its name
to hot springs all over the world. Here you will see one of the
most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up to 30 meters
(98 feet) approximately every ten minutes. The next stop is Kerið, a lake filled extinct volcanic crater. Return to
Reykjavik via Hveragerði greenhouse village, and Hellisheiði
heath.
DAY 3 - Reykjanes Peninsula
and the Blue Lagoon
Drive to the Álftanes peninsula and to Bessastaðir, the
residence of Iceland's President. Then continue through Hafnarfjörður
and over the vast lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula to the lighthouse
at the tip of the peninsula.
Further along the South coast, travel
through rugged lava fields to the the Blue Lagoon. The Lagoon, located
in the middle of a black lava field, has pleasantly warm mineral-rich
geothermal water. The high natural levels of silica and minerals
give the Lagoon its vibrant blue colour. The facilities include modern
changing rooms and showers, an indoor geothermal pool, a winter garden,
restaurants and other services.
DAY 4 -
South Shore Tour
We drive
from Reykjavik over the mountain pass Hellisheiði offers a
magnificent view of the wide plains formed by glacial rivers, now
fertile farmland in South-Iceland. A brief stop at Hveragerði with
its greenhouses before proceeding east through small villages and
farmlands to the majestic mountains towering over the coast we
will have frequent views of mountains, including snow shrouded
Hekla, the country’s most active volcano and the towering,
ice capped strato volcano Eyjafjallajökull. We continue through
the region where one of the best known of the Icelandic classical
sagas, Njál’s Saga is set. A stop at the spectacular
waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss. Those two waterfalls
tumble over high rock escarpments.
We go past Dyrhólaey,
a magnificent rocky headland with sheer cliffs, with a huge wave
cut gap in its ocean facing tip to the beautiful sited village
of Vík, where we will stop for lunch. After the break we’ll
head for the sea shore before we turn back to Reykjavík.
The sea shore is flanked by steep bird cliffs rising above the
black, wave pounded sands. In the sea just outside the village
of Vík are Reynisdrangar rocks - 66 meters above sea level
at their highest. According to legend the Reynisdrangar were
formed when two trolls were trying to drag a three-masted ship
to land. When daylight broke they turned into a stone.
DAY 5 - Departure
Your private bus will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Keflavík
International Airport.
